"Grieving relatives and survivors sickened by the mammoth pot of gold accused the firm of putting profit before safety." Railtrack chief executive Gerald Corbett says he considered freezing the dividend rather than face the inevitable criticism. But eventually decided "we should just go ahead" because "we need the support of our shareholders if we are to deliver the railway people want."
