90 Feared Dead in Train Wreck at Paddington Yesterday

snippet: The death toll is increasing in the aftermath of the rush hour crash between yesterday`s 8.06 commuter service from London to Great Bedwyn and the 6.03 Great Weatern express from Cheltenham. "The trains erupted into a fireball, killing dozens - including both drivers" says The Times in its lead story this morning. Of the 154 injured, "49 were still in hospital last night. Twenty-six bodies have been lifted from the wreckage, but many more are likely to be found when the final carriage is searched today."

All the dead were adults, but none had been officially named.
"Survivors saw fellow passengers stumble from the blazing wreckage as human fireballs," reports The Mirror. "They watched in horror as the burns victims lay at the trackside, their blackened skin peeling off in layers."

Firemen carried out "the grim task of removing charred bodies" forced themselves to ignore the "grim sound" of mobile phones ringing in the pockets and briefcases of victims.
"The first patient was admitted to St Mary`s Hospital at Paddington at 8.50am," reports The Independent. "In total, 31 ambulances, six paramedic response units, two emergency control vehicles, four doctors and five medical teams dealt with the injured." [... more]
