Bill Gates Gives Gift To UK As Microsoft Empire Is Shaken

of walk-in computer centres across Britain," reports The Mirror. Arts
Minister Alan Howarth made the announcement yesterday. The project "will be
used to extend the Internet revolution through a network of Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) centres in 47 libraries."
Meanwhile, The Independent reports that Microsoft has been in talks with
the US Justice Department following the ruling on Friday by Judge Thomas
Penfield Jackson that the Microsoft empire legally consititutes a monopoly
and had actively stifled competition from IBM and Netscape.
Microsoft chairman Bill Gates took out a full-page ad in The Washington
Post in response to the ruling to address his shareholders directly.
"Microsoft is committed to resolving this matter in a fair and responsible
manner, while ensuring that the fundamental principles of consumer benefit
and innovation are protected," he said.
The court will now decide whether Microsoft has liability. A ruling against
