"The sea staple that provoked the cod wars of the 1970s is being outsold by salmon in the nation`s biggest supermarket." The growth of salmon farming has brought prices down to their lowest ever and salmon is now 20p per pound cheaper than cod in Tesco. 170,000 tonnes of cod is eaten in the UK each year, of which about 40% is landed in Britain. "Supplies of cod are shorter than I`ve ever known," says Warren Rudge at Ivan`s fish bar in Credley Heath, West Midlands.
