Adams called a press conference in Belfast yesterday and demanded that the British intelligence services, who were "clearly acting outside the law" should be "brought to heel" by the prime minister. The microphone was planted in the ceiling of the car and linked to a satellite transmitter concealed in the door column. So far, Mr Blair has not commented.
There seems to be some confusion over the nature of the high-tech equipment used. The Express says "the listening and tracking equipment, unavailable on the open market, was specially designed to fit the Ford Mondeo and is said to have been installed when it was built" while The Guardian reports the opinion of "experts" that "the car could have been stolen and replaced with the owner none the wiser" and The Times says that the bugging device "is available on the open market". Mr Adams, on the the other hand, has "a remarkable fluency with the technology involved," says The Times, noting that "most reporters looked on in ignorance" while it was explained. [... more]
