Cricket: England Raise Wisden Trophy
who: England cricket team
what: Win Cornhill series
where: The Oval, LONDON
when: Yesterday
snippet: "England pace ace Darren Gough paid tribute to out-of-form England skipper Nasser Hussain as the nation exploded with joy yesterday," says The Star`s Rodney White as England swept away with The Wisden Trophy by beating the West Indies in the Cornhill Test series for the first time since 16th July 1969.
"Nasser has had a hard run but he has been a brilliant person and a brilliant captain throughout the year," says Gough, who took three wickets yesterday and was named man of the series for his 25 overall. "He is by far the best captain I have ever played for. I hope he keeps going and going."
"Already 2-1 ahead, Hussain`s men needed to do no more than draw," says David Lloyd in The Evening Standard. "But they and most of the 18,500 folk lucky enough to be watching them wanted something special to celebrate".
Legendary West Indies bowler Curtly Ambrose batted 28 in his final Test appearance yesterday before his side was given all out for 215 - well short of the 374 needed for an unlikely victory - thanks to pace-bowlers Darren Gough, Andrew Caddick, Craig White and Dominic Cork.
"If the moment will remain forever sweet in the minds of those who played, it must be pointed out that this was a West Indies side that has now lost its last five series abroad," says Derek Pringle, tempering England`s spirits in The Independent. "Indeed, before their win at Edgbaston, in the first match of the series, they had not won an overseas Test since Perth in February 1997." [... more]
