snippet: Tomorrow`s US presidential elections will go "down to the wire" with no clear winner in the pre-election polls between Democratic party candidate, and vice president, Al Gore and Republican party candidate George W Bush.

Campaigners were concentrating on three key states yesterday, says The Financial Times. Al Gore went to Pennsylvania and Michigan while George Bush was in Florida alongside his brother Jeb, the state governor.

"On Monday Mr Gore embarks on a final, frantic, 30-hour marathon campaign swing through five states," reports the FT, "beginning before dawn in Waterloo, Iowa, and ending on Tuesday in his home state of Tennessee".

"Mr Bush will fly more than 3,000 miles in the last frenetic 12 hours of his campaign," says Julian Borger in The Guardian, "and will also visit Wisconsin and Iowa, two more states which voted for Mr Clinton in 1992 and 1996 but which are now evenly balanced."

Yesterday Mr Gore, who is performing strongly in the polls in key marginal states, asked the American people to take their "souls to the poll", while Mr Bush, who narrowly leads the national polls, promised voters "a fresh start after a season of cynicism". [... more]
