Keegan Sues Over Betting Allegations

snippet: "Kevin Keegan last night instructed his solicitors to begin legal proceedings against the News of the World," reports The Guardian today, "after it alleged that as England coach he had taken a central role in gambling with his players."

Keegan wants a full retraction and apology from the Sunday tabloid which claimed this week that he acted as a bookmaker during team-building England "race nights" in which £40,000 bets changed hands.

"Mr Keegan utterly refutes the allegations and is determined to take whatever action may be necessary to defend his reputation," said a statement from Keegan`s solicitors yesterday. "A letter has been sent to the News of the World in advance of legal action against the newspaper."

Keegan also reiterated his thanks to FA chief executive Adam Crozier for his support throughout the month since his dramatic resignation as England football coach on October 7th. And, says The Star`s Scott Coleman, Crozier has strongly denied allegations that he started a whispering campaign against Keegan in order to bolster the FA`s decision to appoint Sven Goran Eriksson as successor.

"I`m lucky enough to consider myself a friend of Kevin`s," says Crozier, "having been through some difficult times together. The idea I would now go round bad-mouthing him is preposterous." [... more]
