US Waits Till Next Week For Election Result

The Democratic Party are set to demand a second recount in Florida following a dispute over spoilt ballot papers in Palm Beach County which has left Tuesday`s election result in limbo.

Last night it was confirmed by election officials that Republican Party candidate George W Bush was ahead by 1,784 votes with the recount far from complete. But the dispute is far from over.

It may take a week for "all the absentee ballots posted back to Florida from residents abroad to trickle into the capital," writes The Independent`s David Usborne.

Mr Gore`s campaign representative, former secretary of state Warren Christopher, made it clear the Democrats would fight to the end when he announced yesterday that his team had uncovered "serious and substantial irregularities requiring the full attention of the Florida courts".

The race has now become a marathon, says the BBC, which reports this morning that the fourteen counties which have not yet announced their results have been given until Tuesday to do so. Palm Beach county officials begin their recount on Saturday and will deliver the results on Monday. [... more]
