Six Changes To England Lineup
who: England football team
what: Play Finland in World Cup 2002 qualifier
where: Helsinki
when: Tonight
snippet: Michael Owen is one of six players out of the picture tonight as Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham, along with Emile Heskey, form the attack force for Howard Wilkinson`s "shambolic" England side against Finland in their World Cup 2002 qualifying game.
But, says Steven Howard in The Sun, they`ll be doing it in silence because Manchester United duo Cole and Sheringham "have not spoken for two seasons".
"The strikers fell out after a match at Bolton when Sheringham accused Cole of costing United a goal by failing to track back," writes Howard. "Since then, it`s all gone very quiet over there."
"Wilkinson, in temporary charge after Kevin Keegan`s resignation in the wake of Saturday`s 1-0 defeat by Germany, can certainly not be accused of erring on the side of caution," says David Lacey in The Guardian. "Few could have expected that he would pick three strikers or, if he did, that Michael Owen would not be one of them."
"The most controversial selection is Phil Neville, the Manchester United defender who came in for massive abuse after conceding the penalty which ended England`s Euro 2000 hopes," writes The Star`s Danny Fullbrook. "But Wilko had little choice but to turn to him after his brother, Gary, failed a fitness test on a toe injury yesterday."
The caretaker manager is "either brave or foolhardy" ij his selections, comments Glenn Moore in The Independent. Not just because England may fail to qualify for the tournament, but because inevitably it will be much harder for the FA to recruit a world-class coach for a team who won`t be at the World Cup.
