Gore and Bush Await Supreme Court Ruling

snippet: "The closest and most extraordinary presidential election in recent American history could be decided in court today," predicts The Telegraph. Attorneys representing the Democrat and Republican parties will each have 45 minutes to argue before the US Supreme Court, "which was divided five to four on Saturday in deciding to halt the vote recounts ordered less than 24 hours earlier by the Florida Supreme Court".

"George W Bush is favourite to emerge from the latest battle as the winner," says The Sun`s Paul Thompson, following "an amazing roller-coaster weekend". If they decide in favour of Mr Bush, he will be the 43rd presaident of the United States. "If they find for Gore the election shambles continues."

Justice Antonin Scalia has made it clear that Mr Bush has strong case. "A majority of the court, while not deciding the issues presented, believe that the petitioner has a substantial probability of success," he said yesterday.

"Tomorrow is the deadline for naming Florida`s representatives to the Electoral College which will pick the president next Sunday," writes Tim Shipman in The Express. "The Republican-led Florida Legislature is set to name Bush electors if there is no definitive court ruling." [... more]
