snippet: After a recount in Florida, Republican Party candidate George W Bush is leading Democrat Al Gore by 300 votes in the presidential election. The total votes so far are 2,910,492 against 2,910,192. But more than a week after election day, the race is still not over.

"Katherine Harris, the Florida secretary of state, did not declare the Texas governor winner, and therefore President, because uncertainty still surrounded legal wrangling by both sides," reports Ben Fenton in The Telegraph. The Democrats, who yesterday lost a legal battle to stall the deadline for completion of the recount, are considering an appeal. The Republicans, meanwhile, were attempting to block the manual recounting of votes in four counties.

The final winner in Florida may be decided on Friday, the dealine for postal votes. But, says Toby Moore in The Express, the next president may not be confirmed even then. "The Bush campaign has made clear it may challenge the election results in five other states which Gore carried by slim majorities," says The Express.

In one of those five, New Mexico, the vote was "too close to call," continues Moore`s report. And he hits upon a solution which may solve a lot of time and trouble. "If the vote is a draw the state has a way of deciding who wins: A coin is flipped." [... more]
