Violence Continues On Day One Of Peace Summit

snippet: "New violence flared on the West Bank yesterday," says David Dillon in The Express, "as President Clinton urged Middle East leaders to strive for peace, warning that failure could bring `grave consequences`."
"Scores were wounded in clashes yesterday," reports The Guardian. "The fiercest incident was at Rafah, near the Egyptian border, where a Palestinian policeman was killed and two Israeli soldiers wounded". In Jerusalem, a 13-year-old Palestinian boy shot in the head and declared clinically dead in hospital.
In Ramallah, Israeli snipers "picked off high-profile Palestinian rioters" at the barricades, says Sam Kiley in The Times. "Stone-throwing youths watched, stunned, as men and boys at the barricades collapsed with small bullet holes in their chests, testicles, arms and hips".
"As night fell after a day of negotiations in Egypt`s balmy Sharm el-Sheikh resort," writes The Independent`s Phil Reeves, "Israeli officials indicated agreement had been reached on a cessation of hostilities in the immediate conflict between Israel and the Palestinians". [... more]
