Venables Will Not Be England Coach
who: Terry Venables
what: Will not be next England coach, FA decide
when: Yesterday
snippet: Terry Venables will not be the FA`s choice for England coach because he lacks the "integrity" for the job, according to newspaper reports this morning. "The FA are looking for a manager who is 100 per cent squeaky clean," reports The Mirror. "And, in the light of Venables` well documented past troubles, FA chiefs... have scratched him from their list".
Chief executive Adam Crozier and his six advisers met at the FA`s Lancaster Gate HQ yesterday and made it clear "that they would not be returning to the man who coached England to the semi-finals of Euro 96, whom many of the senior England internationals want back at the helm and who commands such widespread support within the professional game and across the country," according to The Telegraph`s Henry Winter.
According to a statement, the FA are looking for a man who is respected in the footballing world, with evidence of "sustained football success as a coach/manager," international experience, astute tactics, integrity, "handling of outside pressures, capacity to focus solely on the job, decision making and communication skills".
In short, the FA are after "a man of upright standing rather than a shady businessman who is halfway through a £240,000 payment to the Department of Trade and Industry for various misdemeanours," says Matt Dickinson in The Times.
"The group unanimously agreed on the next steps that will be taken," the statement concluded. "No further statement will be made until next week."
"One man who does meet all the criteria is Newcastle manager Bobby Robson, another former England boss," says The Sun`s Brian Woolnough. "Robson, 67, is likely to be invited in a one-off capacity to take charge of the friendly in Italy next month." [... more]
