Florida Vote To Be Decided Today

snippet: "Nearly two weeks of legal and political warfare are set to reach a climax today," promises The Guardian`s Martin Kettle, "when the Florida supreme court hears legal arguments from George W Bush and Al Gore which could settle the outcome of the disputed US presidential election."
The court will decide whether it is constitutional for manually recounted votes from the Democratic Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties to be included in the final result. "If the judgment is YES Democrat Gore, 52, is likely to emerge the overall winner," says The Sun. "If the verdict is NO Republican Bush, 54, will be favourite to move in to the White House."
"The Gore campaign argues that hand recounts are the only way to reach an accurate tally," explains The Financial Times, "while the Bush campaign says hand counting is open to severe abuses by election officials inclined to favour the Democrats."
Tempers flared amongst election officials over the weekend, says The Independent. "A fracas broke out late Saturday night in Palm Beach when a counter accidentally put a ballot in the wrong stack," writes Ron Fournier.
"You would have thought she`d killed 14 people," County Judge Charles Burton commented, urging the officials to moderate their disputes "in a nice way". [... more]
