Court Awards Recount To Gore

snippet: Al Gore won an important victory in the race for the US presidency last night - although a little too late for most of today`s papers - when the Florida Supreme Court ruled that a manual recount of three Democratic Party-dominated counties in the disputed Florida election would go ahead.

"The seven member court unanimously voted to overrule a lower court decision that said Katherine Harris, the Florida secretary of state, was free to ignore the results of the manual recounts and certify the election results last week," reports The Financial Times.

Ballot paper "chads" were the key to the Democratis Party`s argument for mistrusting the machine-count results. "Chads are scraps of paper that are dislodged when a ballot is punched," says The Independent, "and there are thought to be thousands of Florida ballot cards where the voting punch did not make a hole but left a dimple."

"Bush holds a 930-vote lead in the official, but uncertified vote tallies from Election Day," says The Guardian. "Gore has slowly been eating into that lead in recent days as recounts have proceeded".

The recount results must be submitted to Katherine Harris by 9am on Monday. [... more]
