Western Powers Tell Milosevic to Quit

snippet: Britain joined Western powers yesterday in demanding that Slobodan Milosevic stand down following his defeat in the Yugoslav elections.

The US State Department accused the ruling party of "massive irregularities and reports of fraud of just about every size, shape and colour" and Robin Cook, the Foreign Secretary, described Mr Milosevic as a "beaten, broken-backed president".

"Thousands of demonstrators chanted: `Kill yourself, Slobodan, and save Serbia`," says The Sun`s Michael Lea. "More than 40,000 packed a square in Yugoslav capital Belgrade as it became clear that evil Slobba had been beaten in the presidential election."

Nevertheless, the official result has not yet been announced and the secretary general of the ruling Socialist Party has claimed that in votes counted so far, Mr Milosevic leads the main opposition candidate Vojislav Kostunica by 45 to 40 percent.

"One theory last night was that Mr Milosevic would seek a second vote," reports The Independent, "which could offer a two-week breathing space in which to gather his battered forces. But his precise intentions were a mystery amid signs he was struggling to come to terms with a stunning poll defeat and the greatest threat to his 13 years in power". [... more]
