Girl, 11, Shot In Back In Ulster Turf War

Charlene Daly`s family home on the loyalist Ballysally estate in Coleraine "was raked with machine gunfire on Monday night," reports John Mullin, The Guardian`s Ireland correspondent. Her parents, Frankie and Yvonne, and younger sister Coleen escaped unhurt, but Charlene suffered a collapsed lung and broken ribs.
"Frank, once jailed for being a member of the Loyalist Ulster Defence Association, blamed the rival Ulster Volunteer Force," says The Sun`s Patrick Griffin.
Dr Malcolm Brown, who performed emergency surgery on Charlene, said that a bullet is lodged in soft tissue in her back and it would do more damage to try to remove it. "But she is a very resilient young girl despite the pain," he said, "and her parents can be very proud of how she behaved."
"I have been appalled by this shooting and the level to which these callous thugs are prepared to stoop," said Peter Mandelson, the Northern Ireland Secretary, yesterday. He described the incident as "insane". [... more]
