New York Mayor Demands Decisive Action
who: Mayor Rudolph Giuliani
what: Says the world has a moral duty to back US action against terrorists
where: NEW YORK
when: Yesterday
snippet: "We`re right and they`re wrong. It`s as simple as that," said mayor of New York Rudolph Giuliani yesterday as he demanded "decisive action" against the terrorists responsible for the World Trade Centre attacks in an uncompromising speech to the United Nations General Assembly.
"In a speech that strongly urged the UN assembly to look to its responsibilities, Mr Giuliani said the UN would fail in its `primary mission as peacekeeper` if it allowed countries supporting terrorists to go unpunished," reports The Financial Times.
Mr Giuliani extended a chilling invitation to any of the UN delegates "who equivocate about opposing terrorism, or offer excuses for the terrorists` actions," says The Telegraph.
"Come with me to the thousands of funerals we`re having in New York City," he offered, "and explain those insane, maniacal reasons to the children who have had their parents ripped from them."
"The mayor said world leaders should learn from British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain`s failed appeasement of Hitler in the 1930s," reports The Scotsman.
"Good intentions alone are not enough to conquer evil," he said, recalling that Mr Chamberlain "negotiated with the Nazis and emerged hopeful that he had achieved peace in his time. Hitler`s wave of terror was only encouraged by these attempts at appeasement." [... more]
