"The Tennessee coach driver survived after surgery on his neck, but the attacker died when he was thrown through the windscreen in the crash," says Paul Thompson in The Sun. He later told doctors that his attacker had seemed a polite man, aged 30 to 35, who spoke with a foreign accent.
"The bus careered across Interstate 24, about 60 miles south-east of Nashville, and crashed down on the shoulder on the opposite side of the highway," says Andrew Gumbel in The Independent. "It was just after 4am, the road was empty and no other vehicles were involved."
"Fearing terrorist involvement, Greyhound suspended its services, stranding thousands of passengers as 1,900 buses were taken off the roads," reports Philip Delves Broughton for The Telegraph. "Many had chosen to travel by bus rather than plane following the September 11 attacks."
Greyhound president, Craig Lentzsch, says that investigators told him the incident was the result of "an isolated act by a single deranged individual". [... more]
