Freddie On Fire As Gunners Storm Past Juve
who: Arsenal midfielder Frederik Ljungberg
what: Scores twice to help Arsenal to memorable 3-1 win over Juventus
where: LONDON
when: Last night
snippet: "We can only hope Freddie Ljungberg has burned himself out come flaming June," laments the Sun`s Steven Howard in the aftermath of Arsenal`s superb win over Juventus. "For last night six months before England`s World Cup meeting with Sweden in Saitama he was as hot as a branding iron as Juventus were left with his indelible footprint on their highly-priced backsides."
"Juventus were in form and brimming with confidence," notes David Lacey in the Guardian, "having overwhelmed Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 less than a week earlier. They left here not outclassed maybe but certainly outfought, outmanoeuvred and outrun."
Young Arsenal keeper Stuart Taylor was called upon in the opening minutes as Juve threatened, blocking brilliantly from Pavel Nedved after Trezeguet put the Czech midfielder through. After riding early pressure, it was Arsenal who took the lead. "Almost midway through the half, Lauren`s cross was knocked out to Vieira, who cleverly changed feet for a shot that Buffon, reprehensibly, could not hold," says the Independent`s Steve Tongue. Ljungberg popped up to clip the ball home.
A superb, curling Henry free kick extended Arsenal`s lead before Juve replied with a shot from David Trezeguet which "Sol Campbell cleared off the line only for it to strike Taylor on the chest and rebound over the line," continues the Sun. Any hope of a late equalizer was dashed for the Italians though, when Dennis Bergkamp "outwitted two defenders with sleight of foot and flicked the ball through with the outside of his boot" for Ljungberg to chip in his second and Arsenal`s third of the night.
"A delighted Arsène Wenger praised his team`s `solidarity and togetherness` in achieving `a great victory for the club`," concludes the Independent. The victory, combined with Bayer Leverkeusen`s 3-0 win over Deportivo, leaves all four Group D members on 3 points. [... more]
