Taliban Burned Hundreds Alive In Ovens

snippet: "Murderous Taliban troops baked 300 Afghan civilians to death in steel cargo containers which heated up to 40C," reports The Sun`s Andy Wilks today. "Refugees who fled the carnage also told how limbs were HACKED off suspected supporters of the rebel Northern Alliance."

All of the newspapers have a different angle on the ongoing military action in Afghanistan. Today`s Guardian reports that the Pentagon`s "only publicly announced commando raid on Taliban positions, hailed as a success and beamed around the world in grainy video pictures only hours after it took place, actually went badly wrong, seriously injuring American soldiers."

The Mirror leads with US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld`s reassurance that the war will not drag on for years. Elsewhere, The Telegraph reports that the SAS has successfully completed a reconnaissance mission to the former Soviet Central Asian republic of Tajikistan in preparation for the capture of an air base in northern Afghanistan. They are now expected to establish bases from which US Air Force F15 Strike Eagle and F16 Falcon multi-role combat aircraft can strike at the Taliban frontlines without the need to refuel.

Meanwhile, says The Financial Times, the UN is expected "to give their backing to a transitional government in Afghanistan," reports Carola Hoyos. The UN resolution will emphasise the importance of eradicating terrorism, drug trafficking and human rights violations and stress the role of the UN special envoy to Afghanistan Mr Lakhdar Brahimi as "a midwife of such a government".
