Athletics: Brit Edwards Wins Triple Jump Gold
who: Triple jumper Jonathan Edwards
what: Wins gold medal at World Athletics Championships
where: Edmonton, Canada
when: Last night
snippet: "With a panache that recalled his year of years in 1995, and his Olympic victory at Sydney 2000," writes David Powell in The Times, "Jonathan Edwards last night regained the triple jump world title that slipped out of his grasp four years ago."
"Virtually six years to the day since he won for the first time in Gothenburg," says Duncan Mackay in The Guardian, reporting from the World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, Canada, "Edwards was back on top of the podium with a jump of 17.92 metres. He not only collected a gold medal but the first prize of $60,000."
It was a thrilling contest and by no means an easy win for the 35-year-old from Gateshead. "Unfortunately, cramp hindered Edwards` later jumps and he collapsed in agony while attempting a final round jump," reports the BBC.
"I`m very relieved," said Edwards, quoted in The Sun. "I made a big jump in the second round but it was a foul, so I was delighted with the third round." [... more]
