Bush Begins Blitz On Afghanistan

snippet: "The US and UK launched waves of aerial attacks on targets in Afghanistan on Sunday night," reports The Financial Times, "in their first military response to the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington."
"As the devastating strikes began with four explosions over the Afghan capital Kabul, the White House announced: We are at war," says The Sun. "Other major cities including Jalalabad and Kandahar were plunged into darkness as power stations were destroyed."
"In an address to the American people Mr Bush said that the carefully targeted assaults were designed to disrupt the use of Afghanistan as a terrorist base of operations," reports The Times, "and to attack the military capability of the Taleban regime."
American defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld said this is the start of a "much broader" conflict, reports The Telegraph. He described terrorism as "a cancer on the human condition" that the US will oppose "wherever it is" until it collapses from within.
"Last night, the Taliban said it had shot down a US plane in the southern province of Farah," says The Mirror. "But the claim was rubbished by the Pentagon." [... more]
