Bush Sends In Second Wave Against `Evil-Doers`

"Last night`s US attacks in Afghanistan were aimed at targets on the outskirts of Kabul, and around the northern cities of Mazar-i Sharif and Kunduz," says The Times. "Explosions were also reported around Jalalabad and Kandahar."

"The US is pursuing a `shoot-look-shoot` policy, with planes returning to targets that escaped first time around," explains The Mirror. "President George W Bush said the first phase of the mission was `executed as planned`."

But already, the allies are preparing for a war beyond Afghanistan, says The Guardian. Yesterday, the Bush administration "presented a letter to the United Nations security council in which it formally reserved the right to pursue a wider war," reports Ian Black from a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg. The letter says that the bombing raids are an act of self-defence and that after breaking up the al-Qaeda terrorist network it may be necessary to strike at "other organisations and other states." Iraq may be the next target.

Elsewhere in The Guardian, Suzanne Goldenberg meets Palestinians who describe Osama bin Laden as a hero and America as "the biggest evil around".
