Pizzeria Suicide Nail Bomb Kills Eighteen

"The damage was so horrific," says The Sun, "that Orthodox body collectors used tweezers to remove body parts from wrecked prams, placing them in plastic bags for a religious burial."

"The worst thing I saw," says soldier Naor Shara, who was passing by the crowded Sbarro family restaurant at the time, "which will haunt me all my life, was a dead baby that was sitting in a stroller. After the explosion, the baby`s mother came out and started screaming hysterically."

Responsibility for the bombing, the deadliest attack on Jerusalem for five years, was claimed by Islamist group Hamas. It`s horror has been surpassed "only by the bombing of a Tel Aviv disco in June that killed 22 people," writes The Guardian`s Suzanne Goldenberg.

"Israel`s hardline prime minister, Ariel Sharon, did not retaliate after the Tel Aviv attack," recalls Ms Goldenberg, "but the scale of this outrage - and its location in the busiest junction of Jewish west Jerusalem - made swift and harsh retaliation certain."

Israeli fighter planes attacked a Palestinian police station, reports ITN, and Israeli police stormed the PLO`s East Jerusalem headquarters "and raised a blue and white Israeli flag at its roof". [... more]
