snippet: LATEST: Reports are coming through that a large plane, believed to be a Boeing 747, has crashed in western Pennsylvania..............

Hundreds are feared dead after "two planes crashed into the World Trade Centre tower in the heart of New York`s financial district in what is suspected to be a terrorist attack," reports The Guardian.

The first aircraft crashed into one tower at around 8.50am local time (1.50pm UK). The second crashed into the other about 18 minutes later.

Other eye-witnesses say that people were throwing themselves from the windows as the buildings collapsed around them.

A few minutes later, in Washington DC, a third plane crashed into the Pentagon building. The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) was reported to be responsibile for the attacks, although they have issued a denial.

Both of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre have now completely collapsed. Part of the Pentagon building has also collapsed and fighter planes began patrolling the skies over Washington DC. The stock exchanges in London and New York were closed and all flights in the USA were cancelled until further noticed. George W Bush has described the events as a national tragedy. Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has condemned the events as "unbelievable". Tony Blair, looking shaken, excused himself from the TUC conference. [... more]
