Review of the Year: Bush Vows Venegeance For Thousands Dead
who: George W Bush
what: Says US will have no mercy for nations harbouring terrorists after worst ever peacetime attack on US soil
where: The White House, Washington DC
when: Last night
snippet: "A grim-faced President Bush mourned the deaths of thousands of Americans in Tuesday`s atrocities," reports ITN today, "and vowed to avenge their killings saying the US would make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbored them."
"Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom, came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts," he said in a televised address from the White House last night just hours after two passenger planes hijacked by unknown terrorists crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York, causing them both to collapse, and a third was crashed into the Pentagon building in Washington DC.
"Another hijacked passenger jet - a United Airlines 757 - crashes in Pennsylvania, south-east of Pittsburgh, with all 45 people on board feared dead," reports the BBC. "The plane`s intended target was believed to be the Maryland presidential retreat, Camp David."
"These acts shattered steel," said Mr Bush, "but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve."
Today`s newspaper coverage of the disaster is unprecedented. The Telegraph says the US is "on a war footing"; an eyewitness in The Guardian says it "was like an apocalypse"; The Sun has pictures of people throwing themselves in blind panic from the windows of the 110-storey twin towers; The Independent says that the death toll "is likely to be in the thousands, including at least 265 New York firefighters and 78 of the city`s police officers."
Emergency numbers in the US:
- Terror victims hotline 1 800 331 0075
- Police information number: 1 718 677 8238
- American Airlines 1 800 245 0900
- United Airlines 1 800 932 8555 [... more]
