Blair: We Will Hunt Down Terrorists
who: Tony Blair
what: Says Britain stands "shoulder to shoulder" with US against terrorists
where: LONDON
when: Last night
snippet: "Tony Blair last night declared that Britain stood `shoulder to shoulder` with the American people against the `new evil of mass terrorism`," reports The Guardian, "and warned the perpetrators of the New York and Washington atrocities that `their barbarism will stand as their shame for all eternity`."

On hearing the news of the devastating terrorist attacks on New York and Washington DC, the PM "rushed back to London yesterday afternoon to take charge of the Government`s response," reports The Telegraph, "cancelling his planned speech to the TUC conference in Brighton."

He said that Britain "will not rest until this evil is driven from our world."

"What we have all witnessed on our television screens from America are acts of evil and horror beyond the imagination of any of us," said foreign secretary Jack Starw, following a Downing Street meeting of Cobra, the civil contingencies committee, attended by home secretary David Blunkett and defence secretary Geoff Hoon amongst other key ministers.

"But they are real appalling tragedies," he continued, "for the victims, for the families, for those cities and towns, for the communities of America, for the US and, I have to say, for the peace and stability of the world."

Security has been stepped up in all UK airports. Private planes banned from flying, says the BBC, and no flights are allowed in the airspace over the capital.
