Jet Crash In New York City
who: American Airlines
what: Says Airbus A300 has crashed
where: NEW YORK
when: Today
snippet: "An American Airlines jet crashed at about 9.15 am Eastern Time on Monday near JFK airport in the Far Rockaway area of Queens, New York," reports The Financial Times. "Buildings are on fire in the neighbourhood and emergency services are at the scene, near 129th Street and Newport Avenue."

Flight 587 was an Airbus A300 carrying nearly 246 passengers and 9 crew en route to the Dominican Republic.

The initial evidence seems to point to an accident rather than a terrorist attack. The plane had reached 13,000 feet before something went wrong. "The FBI has said it believes there was an explosion on board the plane moments before it went down," says The Guardian. "One of the plane`s engines fell separately from the rest of the plane."

"The district is on the flight path to JFK airport and the plane would have been carrying up to 24,000 gallons of air fuel," says The Mirror. Mayor Giuliani is on his way to the disaster area where 44 fire trucks and 200 firefighters are on the scene. All airports in New York have been closed.

"Smoke can be seen rising from a residential area near John F Kennedy Airport," says The Telegraph. "The cause is not yet clear."
