Last night`s 0-1 defeat of Auxerre at the Stade Abbé-Deschamps, 90 miles southeast of Paris, Arsenal`s seventh win in succession (their third in the Champions` League) put them at the top of Group A, says Steve Tongue in The Independent. Their next game in the tournament, on October 22nd, will be at home to the team they have just defeated, after which their away fixture against PSV Eindhoven a month later ought to be purely academic.
In fact, Bergkamp, along with Martin Keown, was out through injury and, notes Russell Kempson in The times, "Fredrik Ljungberg was left out because he had suffered a migraine during the day". But there would only ever be one winner as Arsenal played with a swagger that was "within the limits of acceptability and never degenerated into showboating".
Gilberto Silva, who scored last week in Eindhoven, settled the game three minutes into the second half, says The Guardian`s Jon Brodkin, "offering more evidence that, despite his image as a steady midfielder, he can burst forward to good effect". [... more]
