Keane Hit With Disrepute Charge
who: Roy Keane
what: Charged with bringing football into disrepute after autobiography revelations
where: Old Trafford, MANCHESTER
when: Yesterday
snippet: "A hefty chunk of Roy Keane`s royalties from his controversial autobiography could be diverted straight into the FA`s coffers if the Manchester United player is found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute," ponders The Scotsman this morning after the fiery Irishman was charged on two counts by English football`s governing body for his tackle on - and subsequent comments about - Manchester City`s Alf Inge Haaland.

The charge centres around Keane`s allegation that he deliberately set out to injure Haaland during last year`s Manchester derby at Old Trafford, explains The Evening Standard. "Relations between the pair had soured in 1997 when Keane ruptured his cruciate knee ligaments at Elland Road after attempting to trip the Norwegian during a stormy encounter with Haaland`s former club Leeds." Haaland reportedly accused Keane of feigning injury. Then in April last year, Keane was sent off after a dangerous lunge at Haaland, about which he says in his autobiography: "I`d waited almost 180 minutes for Alfie, three years if you look at it another way. He had the ball on the far touchline. Alfie was taking the piss. I f***ing hit him hard. I`d waited long enough."

Frustratingly for the FA, says The Evening Standard, given the time-frame over the charges, it is likely that Keane will still be on the treatment table at the end of any new suspension after his recent hip operation.

Meanwhile, notes The Sun, Keane cancelled a book-signing session at a Manchester Asda this week after store bosses said they were unable to comply with his demands for heightened security. With rather amusing delusions of grandeur, an Asda spokesman said: "He walked out on us just like he did the Republic of Ireland in the World Cup." [... more]
