snippet: Saddam Hussein defiantly denounced American plans for a military assault in a live television broadcast across the Arab world yesterday, reports The Independent.
The Iraqi dictator promised that an invasion would end in "disgraceful failure", says the report by US correspondents David Usborne in New York and Andrew Buncombe. He said anyone attacking his country "would be digging their own graves" and he echoed the words of George W Bush by alluding to the "forces of evil" plotting against him.
"Capitalising on reports that Saudi Arabia and Jordan had voiced disapproval against US military action," reports The Scotsman, "Saddam went out of his way to praise his fellow Arab nations."
Meanwhile, The Telegraph says that, in spite of his protestations this week, President Bush will not hesitate to launch an attack on Iraq without the support of Congress, according to a military leader, who compares the situation in the Middle East to Western Europe in the 1930s.
"A pre-emptive strike against Hitler at the time of Munich would have meant an immediate war as opposed to the one that came later," says Richard Perle, head of the Pentagon`s defence policy board. "Later was much worse." [... more]
