The dissidents made the following statement: "In the name of the Iraqi people and their legitimate leadership, the Iraqi opposition, we declare the liberation of Iraqi soil begins today. Our action is peaceful and temporary. Our path is the liberation of Baghdad."
"Streets around the embassy were sealed as police took up positions backed by an armoured vehicle," says The Sun. And late last night, masked German police commandos brought a peaceful end to the stand-off, arresting five members of the previously little-known Democratic Iraqi Opposition of Germany, who gave themselves up without a fight.
Elsewhere, US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld says that the US must attack Iraq now and let history be the judge, says The Telegraph. The Independent says that the US has abandoned a plan for a military strike on suspected al-Qaeda collaborators in northern Iraq; and The Financial Times reports that "disgruntled Saudis have pulled tens of billions of dollars out of the US, signalling a deep alienation from America".
