Stop Lying Or Face Extinction, Bush Tells Saddam
who: George W Bush
what: Says Saddam Must `stop the lies` about his arsenal
where: Prague, Czechoslovakia
when: Yesterday
snippet: President George W Bush told Saddam Hussein yesterday "to reveal his weapons of mass destruction or face extinction," reports today`s Telegraph, as Mr Bush "made clear that he would go to war if Iraq persisted in claiming that it had no banned weapons."
The Guardian adds that, in a speech to Czech students yesterday, Mr Bush "paid lip service" to the tough new weapons inspections forced on Baghdad by the UN security council: "People tend to focus on the inspectors as if the inspectors are the end," the president said. "What`s important is eliminating any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Saddam`s going to disarm one way or the other."
Underlining tensions between Washington and the UN, continues The Guardian, "Hans Blix, the chief weapons inspector, claimed Iraq would comply fully with disarmament efforts after two days of talks in Baghdad and even hinted that an agreement had been reached over unannounced inspections."
The Telegraph reports "friction" in the family of Iraq`s leader after Sassam shut down his son Uday`s `Babel` newspaper for "violating the instructions of the Information Ministry". Meanwhile The Independent suspects Iraqi officials are planning to reply to the UN`s "exhaustive" demand for reports on their facilities by "deluging" inspectors with documentation on its weapons programme - "a move that could tie up the inspectors for months."
