Carr Runs Gauntlet Of Hate
who: Murder suspect Ian Huntley`s girlfriend Maxine Carr
what: Appears in court for hearing over Soham murders
where: Crown Court, PETERBOROUGH
when: Yesterday
snippet: Accused Maxine Carr "faced the fury of a 500-strong baying mob as she was driven off to prison yesterday," reports The Sun this morning, adding that their shouts were so loud "they almost drowned the sirens on the three-vehicle police convoy leaving Peterborough magistrates` court."
By the time she emerged to be taken to Holloway prison in north London, adds The Independent, the lines of police "were struggling to hold back the hundreds who had gathered to vent their anger on the woman charged in connection with the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman."
After a short hearing during which Ms Carr was charged with perverting the course of justice, she was remanded in custody at Holloway prison, where the 25-year-old was reportedly placed on suicide watch. The papers make great play of this fact, with The Scotsman describing "a cell fitted with cardboard furniture," away from other inmates.
St Andrews Church in the girls` home town of Soham, Cambridgeshire, is now awash with at least 10,000 floral bouquets, notes BBC News., and more than 90,000 people have also signed an online condolence book. The Sun meanwhile prints a moving message of support from a mum from Dunblane, a town now synonymous with the murder of 16 children in 1996 attack on a local primary school.
The Mirror interviews Ian Huntley`s ex-wife Claire, now married to Ian`s younger brother Wayne, who says she is terrified of stepping outside for fear of violence against her new family. "Me and Wayne haven`t done anything wrong," she pleads. "All we are is the relations. You can pick your friends but you can`t change your relations. If there was anything we could do to change what happened, we would." [... more]
