Henman Acclaimed For Heroic Victory
who: Tim Henman
what: Beats Paradorn Srichaphan 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 to take Britain through to next stage in Davis Cup
where: National Indoor Arena, BIRMINGHAM
when: Yesterday
snippet: Take no notice of Tim Henman`s critics, says Simon Barnes in The Times. "He is immense... He demonstrated this fact, spelt it out with pedantic clarity over the course of three days at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham as he carried Great Britain damn near single-handedly into the World Group of the Davis Cup."
"Saving his very best for last in a tie which 10 days earlier he feared he would have to miss," says The Telegraph`s John Parsons, "the British No 1 outclassed Paradorn Srichaphan 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 in memorable fashion, to give Britain a winning 3-1 lead."
"I hardly put a foot wrong all day and I couldn`t have asked for any more," says Henman, whose note of immodesty is excusable, according to Eve Fodens in The Scotsman. "To win in the style that I did and really dominate the match throughout is right up there with some of my best performances. Add in the fact the way I was feeling physically and it`s massively satisfying."
"Tim was not just winning for his record in Davis Cup," says Henman`s Thai victim, quoted in The Independent. "He was winning for his nation. He is heroic for everybody in his country." [... more]
