snippet: US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld yesterday "drew parallels between America`s current diplomatic isolation and the lonely stand taken by Winston Churchill in the run-up to the Second World War," says The Telegraph. He claimed that the Bush adminstration is as sure now about the threat posed by Saddam Hussein as Mr Churchill was about Adolf Hitler.

"It was not until each country got attacked that they said: `Maybe Winston Churchill was right`," he told a gathering of 3,000 US Marines in California. "Maybe that lone voice expressing concern about what was happening was right."

Nevertheless, says The Guardian, "foreign secretary Jack Straw will today reiterate Britain`s determination to give weapons inspectors a chance to return to Iraq." He is expected to call for the UN to set a deadline for the return of weapons inspectors to Iraq and thereby avert US-led attacks.

"With Tony Blair back at his desk yesterday after his summer holiday, Downing Street reiterated that Britain`s priority was for the Iraqi leader to comply with a UN Security Council demand to allow inspection of his weapons facilities," says The Independent.
