White House Pledges To Consult Congress On Iraq

snippet: "President George Bush has pledged his administration to fully consult with Congress before any US military action in Iraq," says The Scotsman as vice-president Dick Cheney told US war veterans in San Antonio that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein is bent on acquiring nuclear weapons and would use them to terrorise the world.
Meanwhile, The Financial Times says that Jacques Chirac, stopping short of naming the USA, is the latest world leader to signal its concern. The French president warned that talk of unilateral military action was a "worrying development" which undermined the law of the UN Security Council. And The Telegraph says that the US may be caving in to this pressure because Mr Bush`s advisers are reportedly deep in debate at the president`s ranch in Crawford, Texas, over whether or not to involve the UN "in a final, symbolic effort to demand that Saddam Hussein must re-admit weapons inspectors".
At home, a survey of Labour Party opinion by The Times revealed that "an overwhelming majority of Labour constituency chairmen in the party`s most vulnerable seats said they would not support Mr Blair if he committed British forces to war."
And Peter Mandelson, Mr Blair`s unofficial envoy to east Asia, "gave a rare glimpse yesterday of Downing Street`s private reservations about a hasty military attack," says The Guardian, when he warned that unilateral action by the US would be "a recipe for chaos". [... more]
