UN Makes Little Progress On Iraq Ultimatum

snippet: Representatives of the United States and Britain spent the weekend in "intense but largely fruitless lobbying" to the UN Security Council in an effort to win global support for a new ultimatum against Iraq, reports The Times. The two-day session is already bogged down by technical details and even if there is a agreement on the return of weapons inspectors this week "another round of talks may be required to establish the rules under which they will work."
Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister, Tariq Aziz, told the Council that he did not feel confident that the UN was able "to resist American pressure and American manipulation," says The Independent. "A fatalistic Mr Aziz accused the Americans of doing everything to prevent the weapons inspectors from returning to Iraq to maximise the justification for war."
Meanwhile, Saad Hattar in The Times reports that "Baghdad`s residents pretend to be indifferent" to the prospect of war but talks to some of the "few Iraqis [who] dare to speak their minds". A Mirror article takes a sneak peek at Saddam Hussein`s family album, but sadly neglects to publish the pictures online. And back home, at the Labour Party Conference, Tony Blair is expected to "get a free hand from the Labour conference to join a US military drive against President Saddam Hussein of Iraq in the last resort," according to The Guardian.
