European Team Reclaims Ryder Cup

"Irishman Paul McGinley rolled in the winning putt on the 18th green to spark wild celebrations as he clinched the half point needed."

Montgomerie played 82 holes in five matches without ever dropping behind and the Europeans won by 15 and a half points to 12 and a half.

The Telegraph`s Lewine Mair calls Torrance "a humorous and inspired captain who should do the job again." Torrance called McGinley "a hero who came out of the shadows" and reflected his praise on the team.

"For my part all I did was drag them to the water," he said, "and they drank copious amounts."

He also gave credit to the support of the crowd, as does The Independent`s James Lawton, who calls the 35,000 spectators at The Belfry a "fiercely partisan but scrupulously fair crowd" and notes that this weekend`s competition was sporting in both senses of the word, laying to rest unpalateable memories of the US celebrations three years ago at the Brookline Country Club in Boston.
