Huntley: Yes, I Killed Jessica
who: Suspected killer Ian Huntley
what: Admits for the first time that he suffocated Jessica Chapman
where: The Old Bailey, LONDON
when: Yesterday
snippet: Ian Huntley admitted for the first time yesterday that he killed ten-year-old Jessica Chapman "by suffocating her in the bathroom of his home", reports The Scotsman after Huntley`s second day in the witness box. On Monday, he said he accepted responsibility for both deaths, "but before yesterday he had never publicly said that he killed either girl."
Under cross examination, Huntley admitted that Jessica died "when he put his hand across her mouth to stop her screaming as she saw her friend Holly Wells lying motionless in the tub," continues The Guardian, but said that "he did not deliberately harm her." "You realised you had killed her?" Richard Latham QC, for the prosecution, asked him. "Yes", Huntley replied. The lawyer asked: "You had killed her, hadn`t you?" In a barely audible voice, Mr Huntley replied: "Yes".
The Times leads on the fact that Huntley "launched into an angry outburst" when Mr Latham probed him on his comments that, after the girls died, Huntley had needed a moment to collect his thoughts. "You don`t need to collect your thoughts in that situation," Mr Latham snapped. Huntley, "his voice rising and his face reddening", replied: "In these circumstances it is very easy to be rational. In those circumstances you are not so rational". He then shouted: "Believe me, I know."
The Sun focuses on Huntley`s denial "that there was any sexual motivation for inviting the pair into his house," and is the only online paper to print photos of the defendant`s house that were released yesterday. [... more]
