Carr Says She Lied For Love
who: Murder suspect Ian Huntley`s girlfriend Maxine Carr
what: Says she loved alleged killer "very, very much"
where: The Old Bailey, LONDON
when: Yesterday
snippet: "Maxine Carr sobbed as she told the Old Bailey yesterday that fellow prisoners had branded her `Myra Hindley mark two," reports The Guardian from day 22 of the Old Bailey trial where she is accused of two counts of assisting an offender and one of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. "Ms Carr, 26, denies giving her former fiance Ian Huntley a false alibi knowing that he had murdered Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman at their home in Soham, Cambridgeshire."
Carr told the court she had only lied because her boyfriend, whom she loved "very, very much", had suffered a nervous breakdown after being accused of a rape before they met and she believed he would be devastated by fresh accusations. She claims she would have told the police "like a shot" if she had not wholeheartedly believed he was innocent.
Huntley claims that ten year-old Holly "slipped into a filled bath and drowned while he was trying to help her stem a nosebleed," explains The Sun. "He said he accidentally suffocated Jessica when he put his hand over her mouth to stop her screaming."
Carr was away in Grimsby on Sunday, August 4th 2002, when Huntley says the girls died in his home. She returned on the following Tuesday. Both she and Huntley have told the court that she had not heard Huntley`s version of events until this week. [... more]
