Heskey Faces Tunnel Punch-Up Ban
who: Liverpool striker Emile Heskey
what: Lost his temper in ruck with Turkey players
where: Istanbul
when: Saturday night
snippet: "Shocking pictures released last night show the fury and chaos in the players’ tunnel as England and Turkey stars clashed at half-time in their stormy Euro qualifier," says The Sun. "The fuzzy images were filmed by a Turkish TV cameraman as the two teams trooped off the field for their break in Istanbul. "
The Mirror says that "mild-mannered Liverpool striker" Emile Heskey "lost his temper completely" over "a racist remark from Turkey`s non-playing squad member Hasan Sas". The paper speculates that once UEFA sees the pictures, "his Euro 2004 could be over nine months before the tournament starts".
"The tunnel incident followed a disagreement between David Beckham and Alpay after the England captain missed a penalty and was goaded by the Aston Villa defender," says The Telegraph. "As the players left the pitch Alpay teased Beckham further and it has been claimed that several players from both sides, along with security and medical staff, became involved."
Meanwhile, Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who missed the 0-0 draw with Turkey due to suspension, still does not know his fate - the Football Association is due to charge him for his failure to attend a random drug test. He says that he forgot about it but should he be found guilty of wilfully missing the test, he faces a maximum two-year suspension. [... more]
