Hussain & Butcher Hit Ton On Day One
who: England cricket team
what: 296-3 on day one of third Test
where: Trent Bridge, NOTTINGHAM
when: Yesterday
snippet: Nasser Hussain clocked up his 13th Test ton with 108 not out on the first day of the third Npower Test against South Africa at Trent Bridge yesterday. Mark Butcher also made his century (yesterday`s 106 was his third ton of the year and eighth overall), and England finished the day with a commanding 296-3.

"In many ways Hussain needed the score as much as England, just to get rid of the baggage of being the former captain of a team in flux," writes Derek Pringle in The Telegraph, "and he celebrated the exorcism with a flurry of punches and whoops."

"Barely two weeks ago Hussain looked a broken man but he is a cricketer of extraordinary resilience," says The Guardian`s David Hopps. "Gloomily introspective at Lord`s, he has been tenacious here from the moment that he announced on Tuesday that he was available for England anytime, anywhere."

However, The Independent`s Angus Fraser says "it was Butcher`s innings which caught the eye" and hoped that England will gain added confidence from the knowledge that they`ve never lost a Test match in which Butcher has reached three figures.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE: Hussain out for 116, England 408-7 (2.39pm). [... more]
