Following the capture of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in a "spider hole" near his hometown of Tikrit on Saturday, the debate over his fate intensified yesterday, says The Scotsman, "with both George Bush and Tony Blair calling for him to face trial in Iraq, even if that meant execution".
"There were no firm answers last night to questions about who would judge the former dictator, how far the international community would be involved in his trial and whether the claims of non-Iraqis will also be heard," says The Telegraph. "Both Iran and Israel - mortal enemies in the Middle East - demanded that Saddam be tried not only for the brutality meted out to Iraqis but also for blood he has spilled beyond Iraq`s borders."
Meanwhile, peace has not returned to the streets of Baghdad. Suicide bombers attacked two police stations yesterday, in and near the capital, killing nine people. "The attacks, following a suicide bombing the previous day in western Iraq that claimed at least 17 lives, brought a swift end to Sunday`s euphoria," says The Financial Times. [... more]
