"Tottenham`s chairman Daniel Levy interrupted his honeymoon to telephone and dismiss Hoddle," says The Guardian, "describing results over the past nine months as "unacceptable" and noting there has been no "visible sign of improvement" despite an outlay of about 12m this summer.

Levy has appointed director of football David Pleat as caretaker manager, says The Independent. "The former Spurs manager is said to want the job permanently, but it is thought the No 1 target will be Celtic`s Martin O`Neill."

"It is time for Glenn Hoddle to enter the next life, because he is surely finished in football management," says Matt Dickinson in The Times. "Where else is there for him to go, except so far abroad that he can escape the tatters of his reputation?
