Rooney Signs For Man Utd
who: Everton striker Wayne Rooney
what: Signs for Manchester United in deal worth up to £27million
where: Old Trafford, MANCHESTER
when: Yesterday
snippet: "Wayne Rooney was told to clean up his act yesterday as he signed for Manchester United - looking forward to becoming the world`s richest teenage footballer," says The Mirror. "United manager Alex Ferguson, who got the England striker from Everton in a £30million deal, told 18-year-old Rooney he must move away from Liverpool and the friends who have led him astray."

"I think we`ve got the best young player this country has seen in 30 years," said Sir Alex, publicly, quoted in this morning`s Sun after obtaining Rooney`s signature on a deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 30th 2010 for an initial fee of £10million, with a further £10million payable next summer and up to £7million more, depending on Rooney`s contribution to the continuing success of Manchester United and England.

"It was a tough decision to leave Everton, the club I`ve supported and played for all my life, but I`m excited to be joining a club as big as Manchester United," responds the 18 year-old, quoted in The Telegraph. "I feel this can only improve my career, playing with top players in top competitions like the Champions League and I can`t wait to meet up with the team."

The Guardian says the deal will earn football agent Paul Stretford up to £1.5million, "the equivalent of over two years` wages for Wayne Rooney at Everton". [... more]
