"The Ukrainian opposition last night broke off negotiations with the government," says The Guardian, "and demanded that a late-night parliamentary session pass a motion of no confidence in the prime minister and his cabinet, as international pressure grew for fresh elections."
The crisis is now in its tenth day following a disputed election result that has brought tens of thousands of protestors to the freezing streets. Mr Yanukovych, the Pro-Russian candidate who is the incumbent president`s prime minister, survived last night`s no-confidence motion, says the BBC, "but there were dramatic scenes in Kiev as several protesters backing Mr Yushchenko stormed parliament".
Today, presidential rivals Mr Yanukovych and Viktor Yushchenko, the pro-Western opposition candidate, will meet today with outgoing president Leonid Kuchma in talks mediated by Javier Solana, the European Union`s foreign policy chief, and the Polish and Lithuanian presidents, Aleksander Kwasniewski and Valdas Adamkus.
