snippet: "The soldier who shamed America by posing for photographs showing Iraqi prisoners in humiliating postures tasted a different kind of prisoner humiliation yesterday when she was brought before a military court," says The Times.
The world was shocked and appalled by the publication of photographs at the end of April, apparently taken last year by fellow soldiers at the Abu Ghraib jail near Baghdad, showing "the 5ft 1in soldier smiling and giving the thumbs-up to naked, hooded Iraqi detainees," says The Telegraph. "In one, she was shown holding a naked prisoner on a dog leash." The young West Virginian reservist from the 372nd Military Police Company faces up to 38 years in prison.
"Small in stature, and with short coppery hair, she looked even younger than her 21 years," says The Guardian`s Suzanne Goldenberg who has traveled to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, for the proceedings. "Her pregnancy - now in its seventh month - was concealed beneath the loose tunic of her camouflage uniform."
"Seeking to discredit claims that Private Lynndie England was following orders, prosecutors yesterday portrayed her as an out-of-control soldier who was photographed mocking Iraqi prisoners `just for fun`," says The Independent, borrowing an expression she is alleged to have used when questioned by investigator, Chief Warrant Officer Paul Arthur.
